High unemployment rates, few economic prospects, and social inequality are some of the problems faced by the youth due to the lack of education and skills. Youth@WORK Director, Erica Kempken spoke to #eNCA. #DStv403

Erica Kempken, founder and director of Youth@Work, says skills needed today are not skills needed tomorrow. She says the perpetual problem of youth unemployment in South Africa, is exacerbated by a staggering skills shortage and entrenched despondency. The organization says unemployment has a huge impact on the growth trajectory of South Africa as a nation. This is reiterated by the Assembly of the Unemployed (AoU), which says that the country's high unemployment rate is a major challenge for the country's economy and society. The latest figures announced by Stats SA last week show that approximately 3, 4 million within the ages 15 - 24 are neither in education, or training, or employed. About 50,4% of the 7,8 million unemployed persons do not have matric, and only 39,5% have completed matric. Almost 7% of the unemployed had other tertiary qualifications, while 2,7% were graduates. Joining us virtually are Director of Youth@worK Erica Kempken, Princes Majola, coordinator of the Assembly of the Unemployed, and Aphiwe Dyantyi who's currently a provincial coordinator at Youth@Work.
